Swedish massage was developed in Stockholm several centuries ago and is the style that comes to mind when most people think about massage. It is the most common and best-known type of massage performed today.
A Seedish massage is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Additional techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending and stretching. Lotion or warm oil is often used to reduce friction and stimulate the skin.
Hot stone massage is a specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, heated stones, either as an extension of their own hands, or by placing them on the body while they massage other parts of the body. The heat can be both deeply relaxing and help warm up tight muscles so the therapist can work more deeply, more quickly.
Shiatsu, also known as acupressure, is a finger pressure massage technique that is sometimes confused with acupuncture. Shiatsu massage therapy and acupuncture are founded on the Chinese meridian system. The therapist applies pressure with his thumbs, finger, and palms to specific areas of the client’s body that have been determined during an assessment period prior to the massage session. There are no needle pokes involved with Shiatsu. Massage techniques like tapping, squeezing, rubbing, and applied pressure are applied along the meridians to unblock energy blockages and reintroduce the optimal flow of ki.
Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage but is used to target knots and release chronic muscle tension. Other benefits include reducing inflammation and helping to eliminate scar tissue. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).
Deep tissue massage uses strokes across the grain of the muscles, not with the grain as in Swedish massage. The more intense movements and techniques such as deep finger pressure may be slightly uncomfortable and cause soreness that lasts a couple of days before resulting in the desired relaxation and pain relief.
Sports massage is good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted motion. The massage therapist generally conventrates on a specific area. (Sore neck and shoulders and the like) This is the type of massage offered here at AsianWest.
Our Thai massage therapists operate on the theory that the body is permeated with “lom,” or “air,” which is inhaled into the lungs and travels throughout the body along 72,000 pathways called “sen,” or “vessels.” A significant part of the practice of Thai massage also includes yoga-like stretches which are intended to stimulate the sen and move lom throughout the body.
Another name used for Lomilomi is “Loving Hands” massage. The reason for this is that it works gently yet deeply into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes, totally nurturing the body and, enabling the recipient to relax, give in and simply be.
